Worked example

A new 10 × 10 ft garden bed, 3 inches of compost:

  1. Area: 10 × 10 = 100 square feet
  2. Depth in feet: 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
  3. Volume: 100 × 0.25 = 25 cubic feet
  4. Cubic yards: 25 ÷ 27 = 0.926 cu yd
  5. Weight: 0.926 × 800 to 1,600 lb ÷ 2,000 = 0.37 to 0.74 tons
  6. Bags: 25 ÷ 1 = 25 1 cu ft bags
  7. Bags: 25 ÷ 2 = 13 2 cu ft bags
