Topsoil Calculator

Multiply length × width × depth in feet and divide by 27 for cubic yards. A new 1,000 sq ft lawn with 4 inches of topsoil takes 12.3 cubic yards, about 13.3 to 13.8 tons.

1. Measure the area

For an L-shape or an odd yard, split it into rectangles, circles and triangles. We add them up.

2. How deep?

3. Which topsoil?

Topsoil (dry)

Soil for new lawns, leveling low spots and filling beds. Weighs about 2,160 to 2,242 lb per cubic yard.

Worked example

A 20 × 30 ft area for new lawn, 4 inches of topsoil:

  1. Area: 20 × 30 = 600 square feet
  2. Depth in feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 ft
  3. Volume: 600 × 0.3333 = 200 cubic feet
  4. Cubic yards: 200 ÷ 27 = 7.407 cu yd
  5. Weight: 7.407 × 2,160 to 2,242 lb ÷ 2,000 = 8 to 8.3 tons
  6. Bags: 200 ÷ 0.75 = 267 0.75 cu ft bags

How to choose and how deep

New lawn

Grass needs at least 4 inches of soil, and 6 inches or more is better. Those depths are after the soil has been firmed, so spread a little more than the finished depth.

Raised beds

A raised bed should be at least 6 to 8 inches deep. If the bed sits on loosened ground, the soil below counts toward the root zone too.

Weight

Dry topsoil weighs 2,160 to 2,242 lb per cubic yard. Soil sold by the ton is often damp, so ask your supplier how they measure.
